The Taraba State Ministry of Budget and Planning has enjoined the West African Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (WASPEN), the Institute for Dietetics in Nigeria, the Light Up Initiative, and Taraba News in the fight against malnutrition in Africa.
This initiative is the first of its kind in Nigeria where the program was held in Jalingo Taraba State Capital.
The Theme of the campaign is "Educate, Empower, and Eliminate, leading the fight against Malnutrition in Africa targeted communities in Taraba where the prevalence of malnutrition is high.
It was targeted at areas such as Ardo- kola, Jauro votto, and Mafindi to attract government and Non-governmental organizations to take proactive steps in curbing malnutrition in such areas.
The awareness which took place from the 16th to the 20th of Sept 2024 with a Media sensitisation campaign, Community Nutrition assessment, and seminar for health workers and relevant MDA's to discuss on the proactive step's in curbing malnutrition in the state, also for government to bring out policy's that will support Nutrition issues in the state as well as NGOs to support fight against malnutrition.
The campaign also aims at educating mothers on proper dieting for their babies which consists of food diversification, exclusive breastfeeding practice, and proper hygiene which are the safest ways to combat food insecurity in the country.
Etenseh. F. Bwacha Head of food and Nutrition, Ministry of finance, Budget and Economic Planning said the aim is to advance the science of clinical Nutrition. To also unite the communities world -wide to raise awareness about Diseases -Related Malnutrition (DRM), educate Healthcare professionals from discipline ensuring early detection, intervention and comprehensive care for individual affected by DRM, monitor equality of nutrition in health care Institution Malnutrition is a condition of deficiencies or excesses in nutrients intake, imbalance of essential nutrients or impaired nutritional utilization. The double burden of malnutrition (DBM) consists of both under nutrition and overweight Globally.
He said therefore,let not allow our communities condition to degenerate into this before we swift into taking informed decision and actions because Malnutrition affects directly or indirectly. Let's educate and empower families on proper nutrition and Malnutrition prevention. Let's raise awareness mobilize actions and ensure every individuals has access to balance on this, we will break the ever circulating cycle of under nutrition and over nutrition ravaging our communities, support this awareness campaign and together, let's build a healthier communities.
Dietitian, Grace Steven who is also the campaign coordinator while addressing mothers during the campaign encourages women to be active participants in the welfare of their homes through cultivating a mini garden at home, proper food storage, and learning a trade to help soothe the hash economy.
The CEO of the Light Up Initiative, Dr. Grace Ahams Akor in her dive for development presented each mother in all the communities visited with a whole pack of therapeutic pap specially prepared for children with malnutrition as she emphasis on the need for the mother's to practice exclusive breastfeeding and learn simple nutritious meals for their babies..
Also the director of the hospital also encourage the mothers to practice what ever they were thought into heart as this will go a long way to reduce the case of malnutrition.
