Canada has announced plans to cut the number of international student permits and tighten regulations for foreign workers in 2025. This decision, revealed on Wednesday, is part of a broader strategy to decrease the influx of temporary residents in response to record immigration levels that have pushed the country’s population beyond 41 million this year.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government has cited the strain on Canada’s housing sector, job market, and social services as key reasons for this shift. “It is a privilege to come to Canada, not a right,” said Immigration Minister Marc Miller during a press conference.
For 2025, the government plans to issue 437,000 study permits to international students, down from 485,000 this year and over 500,000 in 2023. Additionally, new restrictions will be implemented regarding work permits for the spouses of certain international students and foreign workers, signaling a significant change in Canada's immigration policy.
