Combating Malnutrition: NGO Continues Awareness Campaign in Jalingo

 





The campaign embarked upon by a coalition of some NGOs in Taraba State towards the move to combat malnutrition made a stop over at the Taraba Specialist Hospital in Jalingo on the 17th September 2024.


The week-long program which commenced on Monday 16th September 2024 seek to address the scourge affecting millions of children worldwide. 


The initiative, led by a coalition of organizations, aims to create awareness, promote exclusive breastfeeding, and support small-scale farmers, among other objectives.


Premise on the researches which identified poor feeding practices, food insecurity, inadequate food storage and handling, and lack of awareness on proper nutrition and hygiene as the primary causes of malnutrition in Taraba State. The coalition, comprising African Parental and Enteral Nutrition, Institute for Dietetics in Nigeria, Light Up Initiative, Ministry of Budget and Planning, and Pro-Health International, embarked on a campaign to implement a multi-faceted approach.


Mrs. Grace Stephen, a lead campaigner, emphasizes the importance of mothers prioritizing their health and well-being, providing proper care and nutrition for their children, and introducing complementary foods at six months. She noted that exclusive breastfeeding is crucial, as it provides essential nutrients and antibodies, lowering infant mortality rates, enhancing cognitive development, and protecting against infections.


That took a cue from global organizations who have developed innovative approaches, such as the Nutrition Impact and Positive Practice (NIPP) approach, to tackle malnutrition. The World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) have endorsed a political declaration and framework for action to address hunger and obesity.


The Light Up Initiative Drive for Development, held at Specialist Hospital Jalingo Taraba State, coincided with World Breastfeeding Week. This annual event educates, empowers, and highlights the importance of breastfeeding for both infants and mothers. Breastfeeding provides numerous health benefits, including essential nutrients and antibodies that boost infants' immune systems and contribute to their overall health.


The event which is encouraging community support for breastfeeding mothers, including creating breastfeeding-friendly spaces and promoting public awareness, helps normalize breastfeeding in society. Donations of healthy therapeutic pap were distributed to women during the event. Mrs. Stephen advised mothers to be mindful of their consumption to ensure a healthy baby.


Person who gave goodwill messages at the event noted that the fight against malnutrition requires collective effort and commitment. This initiative in Taraba State serves as a model for other communities to employ and address this critical issue. 


By promoting exclusive breastfeeding, supporting small-scale farmers, and providing education and resources, the society can work together to combat malnutrition and ensure a healthier future for children worldwide.
