Kefasnomics: Charting Taraba’s Economic Resurgence under Governor Agbu Kefas By Evangelist Ricky David



Governor Agbu Kefas will mark two years in office by the end of next month. This period stands as one of the most transformative in Taraba State’s recent history. Since his inauguration on May 29, 2023, Governor Kefas has initiated bold reforms and strategic investments that have redefined the state’s economic landscape. This overview highlights the significant strides made under his leadership.


The Taraba State Economy Pre-May 29, 2023


Before Governor Kefas assumed office, Taraba faced numerous economic challenges:


 • Low Revenue Generation: The state’s internally generated revenue (IGR) was underperforming, with figures below ₦1 billion annually.


 • Infrastructure Deficits: Many rural areas lacked essential infrastructure, hindering economic activities and access to services.


 • Healthcare and Education Gaps: Limited access to quality healthcare and education services affected human capital development.


Economic Transformation under Governor Kefas


Governor Kefas’s administration has implemented several key initiatives to address these challenges and stimulate economic growth:


 1. Diversification and Revenue Enhancement

The administration has successfully diversified the state’s economy, leading to a significant increase in IGR. In 2024, Taraba’s IGR soared to nearly ₦40 billion, a remarkable improvement from previous years. This surge is attributed to reforms in tax collection and the expansion of economic activities.


 2. Infrastructure Development

Governor Kefas has prioritized infrastructural development, to improve connectivity.


 • Rehabilitation of Danbaba Suntai Airport: In collaboration with the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the Danbaba Suntai Airport in Jalingo has been 

rehabilitated to meet international standards. This project aims to boost economic activities and improve transportation in the state and  while that of Jalingo township road and major roads is underway.

  

 • Renovation of Key Facilities: The administration has also undertaken the renovation of the ultramodern Kefas Palliative Market, the state abattoir, building of the trailer pack,  TSHA and the TY Danjuma House. These projects are part of the government’s efforts to revitalize public infrastructure and enhance service delivery with the state secretariat ongoing and lot more .


 3. Healthcare Reforms

The administration has launched comprehensive healthcare programs, including the distribution of medical supplies and the establishment of new healthcare facilities,Rehabilitation  of all General Hospitals across the state in batches, mobile clinic and a  lot more. Additionally, salaries for healthcare professionals have been increased, and operations at the college of nursing school  and college of health technology have resumed and still ongoing to meet standard which is at 80% stage of completion.


 4. Educational Advancements

Governor Kefas has made significant investments in education, implementing free education for primary and secondary schools and reducing tertiary tuition fees by 50%, and 60 new model schools are under construction to improve educational standards.


 5. Environmental and Security Initiatives

The administration has established the Taraba State Special Task Force on Environment and Illegal Mining, alongside an executive order banning illegal mining practices. These measures have led to the arrest and prosecution of over 100 illegal miners, contributing to environmental conservation and enhanced security.


Looking Ahead: Sustaining Growth and Development


As Governor Kefas approaches his second anniversary in office, the focus remains on sustaining the momentum of economic growth and development. Plans are underway to further enhance revenue generation, improve infrastructure, and expand access to quality healthcare and education. The administration is committed to building a resilient economy that benefits all residents of Taraba State.
