Call for Stringent Action Against Cattle Encroachment on Farmlands in Taraba State

The recurring destruction of crops by herders who allow their cattle to graze freely on farms in Taraba State is an alarming issue that demands immediate attention. This is not merely an unfortunate incident; it is a grave offense with dire implications. At a time when food costs are soaring, and families are already struggling economically, the deliberate destruction of farms after substantial investments of time, resources, and labor is a severe setback for many hardworking farmers.

just last week, I visited my bean farm with high hopes , expecting a successful harvest after months of dedication and effort. But When I visited yesterday being 29th Oct.2024, to my dismay, I found my crops completely consumed by cattle. This incident is not isolated—it has been a growing problem that farmers are facing daily. I strongly condemn this act as a form of terrorism against farmers who depend on agriculture to feed their families and contribute to food security in the state.

The Taraba State Government should urgently implement measures to end this evil. Just as the government has addressed issues of banditry, it should enforce regulations that protect farmlands from cattle encroachment. We also call on herder associations to take responsibility by educating their members and exposing those who deliberately destroying people farms, as well as fostering peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders.

If this harmful trend continues, it will push farmers into adopting measures to protect their crops—actions that may lead to unnecessary conflict. When farms are destroyed, it’s not just the farmer who suffers, but the entire community. Without crops, there will be less food available, driving up prices and deepening economic hardship for everyone.

We urge the state government to act swiftly by establishing a taskforce to safeguard farms and the livelihoods of our farmers. Food security in Taraba State depends on it.
