Fatal Shooting Sparks Tension in Bukuru

The streets of Bukuru town in Jos South local government area of Plateau State were engulfed in tension and chaos on Monday following a tragic incident that left one person dead and two others injured. The incident occurred during an operation by a joint security task force comprising the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Police, and Operation Rainbow, as they enforced a law prohibiting roadside trading.

As news of the shooting spread, angry youths took to the streets, blocking roads and setting tyres ablaze, creating a scene of fear and alarm for residents in the Bukuru area. The Youth leader of Bukuru Community, Bello Muhammad, confirmed the heartbreaking news to our correspondent, detailing that the situation unfolded around 2:00pm.

According to Muhammad, the security personnel descended on the traders unexpectedly, resulting in the shooting of three individuals, with one losing his life and two others sustaining injuries. The deceased, identified as 30-year-old Muhammad Nasiru, was conducting cellphone business in the area at the time of the tragedy. His father, Musa Aliyu, expressed shock and grief, refuting claims that his son was involved in illegal trading on the road.

Musa Aliyu recounted, "The security operatives came to the area where my son and others were selling phones, destroying their display cardboards. I received a distressing call informing me that my son and others had been shot, with Nasiru tragically passing away."

The incident has sparked outrage and demands for justice from the community, with many questioning the use of lethal force by the security task force. Despite multiple attempts to reach the state police command's spokesperson, DSP Alabo Alfred, for comments, no response has been received as of the time of this report.

As the community mourns the loss of a beloved member and prays for the swift recovery of the injured, calls for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting are growing louder. The incident has brought to light the delicate balance between law enforcement and protecting the rights and safety of citizens, prompting discussions on how to prevent such tragedies in the future.
