Taraba State: Creation, Upgrade Of Chiefdoms Received With Mixed Feelings

A few days to his exit as Taraba State Governor, many of his admirers have described the creation and upgrade of Chiefdoms in the State as one of the greatest achievements of the Darius Dickson Ishaku led-administration.

Unfortunately, such a feat has almost been married by a wave of crises in some parts of the State.

For instance, shortly after the upgrading of Kona Chiefdom from a Third Class to a Second Class chiefdom, trouble erupted following a proposal by a committee led by Fidelis Kaigama to reduce the ruling house to the kingdom to just two. The committee was set up to review the gazette of the State Government on the ruling houses of the Jukun Konna Kingdom. But the Taraba State High Court sitting in Jalingo quashed the committee's recommendation to avert the crisis.

Also in Ndola Kingdom, crisis broke out shortly after the Taraba State Government decided to upgrade Ndola Maselbe District to a Third Class Chiefdom.

When news of the appointment and swift turbaning of Mr. Kumu Maikidi Baissa by the State authorities on 23 March 2023 broke out, there was disquiet across the length and breadth of Kurmi Local Government. A multitude in the LGA reportedly claimed that Maikidi was not from the Madaki Tabena Ruling House, the only existing Ruling House in the Chiefdom. Consequently, he was considered not to be of Ndola royal background in Kurmi LGA. They also argued that the Madaki Tabena Ruling House was ancient and highly revered in the history of Ndola Chiefdom.

A group is currently before the Taraba State High Court praying for nullification of the installation of Mr. Kumu Maikidi Baissa.

Meanwhile, the Tii Ichen kingdom where the Taraba State Government recently installed Hon. Justice Emmanuel Dodo Audu (Rtd) as the Tii Ichen, is also being rocked by crisis.

Sitting in Jalingo, Taraba State High Court, presided by Justice Nuhu A. Adi, has ordered Rtd Justice Dodo to stop parading himself as the Tii Ichen

Kurmi Chiefdom.

The court decision follows motion TRSJ/190M/2023 and Suit No:TRSJ/118/2022 in a case whose six plaintiffs include Fhatson Nwunuji Tukura, Williams Ibrahim Yamusa,

Amos Danazumi Shamaki, Danladi Adamah, Umar D. Uriah, and Danladi Danbeki.

The defendants are the Executive Governor of Taraba State, the Bureau for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and the Attorney General of Taraba State.

The judge, however, ordered that the forth defendant, Rtd Justice Dodo, should stop parading himself as the Tii Ichen of Kurmi Chiefdom pending the hearing and the determination of the notice on motion dated 1st day of may 2023.

It should be noted that just recently also, members of Karimjo Community cried foul following the appointment of Alhaji Yakubu Abubakar Haruna Kirim as Second Class Chief of Wurkum Chiefdom. Taraba News reported that residents of Karimjo Community trooped to the streets shortly after the Taraba State Government issued a press statement announcing the appointment on 5 May 2023. During a peaceful demonstration, people carried placards with different messages to register their grievances to the State Government, while seeking for justice for the sake of peace in the Land.

The placards carried messages like, "Justice for Karimjo Community;" "Taraba State Government, Do Justice for Karimjo Community;" "We are for Peace and Not War in A Civilized society;" and "Taraba State Government, Reverse Your Decision to Avoid Tension Over Innocent People," among others.

The people of Karimjo are arguing that the community is not in any way against the Wurkum traditional stool but it should be appropriately sited in any Wurkum Community in the Local Government and not in their home of Karim town to avoid what looks like imposition of a monarch on them in a free and civilized era.

They also strongly believe that the citation of the Wurkum traditional home in Karim town would not reflect justice to the Karimjo Community.
