In a display of respect and camaraderie, Nigeria's First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, paid a courtesy visit to two former military leaders, General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida (rtd) and General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), at their respective residences in Minna, Niger State.
The visit, which took place on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, was a gesture of goodwill and a demonstration of the First Lady's commitment to fostering positive relationships with key stakeholders in the country. Mrs. Tinubu was accompanied by the wife of the Vice President, Hajia Nana Shettima.
During her visit to General Babangida's residence, the First Lady inquired about his well-being and engaged in discussions on matters of mutual interest. She later proceeded to General Abdulsalami's residence, where she repeated the gesture.
This courtesy visit is not the First Lady's first high-profile engagement in recent times. Just five days ago, she launched a campaign to eradicate HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis, demonstrating her commitment to promoting public health and wellbeing.
The First Lady's initiative is part of a broader effort to address the prevalence of these diseases in Nigeria. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the African region has made significant progress in reducing the transmission of HIV, with over 21.3 million people currently on life-saving antiretroviral treatment.
However, despite this progress, there is still much work to be done to eliminate mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B. The WHO has launched a Regional Validation Committee to verify the elimination of these diseases, and Nigeria is expected to play a key role in this effort.
As the First Lady continues to champion initiatives aimed at promoting public health and wellbeing, her courtesy visit to General Babangida and General Abdulsalami serves as a reminder of the importance of building positive relationships with key stakeholders in the country.
