PDP Board of Trustees Decry State of Nation, Demand Action from APC Government

In a dramatic turn of events, the 79th meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) held on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, saw the Chairman, Senator Adolphus Wabara, issue a scathing communique expressing serious concerns over the state of affairs in the nation as well as within the party itself. The meeting delved deep into the unresolved challenges facing the PDP, particularly the disagreements within the National Working Committee (NWC).

The BoT called on all members, organs, leaders, and stakeholders of the party to prioritize the stability, unity, and progress of the PDP above personal or group interests. One of the key issues addressed was the ongoing crisis surrounding the position of the National Secretary of the Party, which is currently before the courts. To tackle this, the BoT established a committee led by Barr Kabiru Tanimu Turaki SAN to engage with the parties involved, analyze the situation, and report back to the Board for further action.

The Acting National Chairman assured the BoT that the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for February 2025 will address all pertinent issues and reaffirm the commitment to unity, discipline, and the core ideals of the PDP. Turning its attention to the national front, the BoT expressed deep concern over the worsening economic and security situation, social dislocation, and general sense of hopelessness in the country.

Blaming the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration for the current state of affairs, the BoT criticized their policies for increasing taxes, fuel prices, electricity tariffs, and telecommunication charges, leading to a rise in the cost of living and a crippling effect on the productive sector. The BoT accused the APC government of lacking patriotism, competence, and a proficient governance team to effectively manage the nation's resources for the benefit of its citizens.

They demanded an immediate reversal of the anti-people policies and urgent steps to stimulate the economy, create jobs, and revamp the ailing sectors. In a show of empathy, the BoT extended condolences to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State on the loss of his elder brother and Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State on the passing of his stepmother.

Despite the challenges facing the party and the nation, the BoT reassured all PDP members and Nigerians that the party remains strong, united, and committed to democracy and the well-being of the citizens at all times. The dramatic nature of the BoT meeting highlights the intense internal struggles within the PDP and the party's fierce opposition to the policies of the ruling APC government.

As the political landscape continues to evolve, only time will tell how these tensions will shape the future of both the PDP and the nation as a whole. In a related development, the PDP Board of Trustees had previously constituted a reconciliation committee to reconcile aggrieved members of the party, especially with Rivers state Governor Nyesom Wike who has been visibly at odds with the party since its presidential primaries in Abuja.

The committee was established to reach out to aggrieved members and resolve contentious issues. The BoT had also congratulated members of the PDP for winning the Osun state governorship election in South West Nigeria and commended the national working committee under the leadership of Dr. Iyorcha Ayo for the successful conduct of the PDP national convention and primary.

The party supporters had also demanded the resignation of the National Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, over the refusal of the party chairman to obey an order of the Federal High Court which sacked Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori as the PDP standard bearer in next year’s governorship election in Delta state. The demands and criticisms come as the PDP continues to navigate its internal challenges while also pushing back against the APC government's policies.
