NASU Calls Off Strike at Taraba State University

In a significant development, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU), Taraba State University Branch, has suspended its strike action, effective immediately. This decision was made after an emergency congress meeting held on January 27, 2025, where the union reviewed the Memorandum of Action (MoA) signed between the Taraba State Ministry of Tertiary Education, the university management, and the NASU leadership.

The MoA addressed several key issues, including the implementation of the new minimum wage, constitution of the university governing council, outstanding salaries and allowances, pension scheme, earned administrative allowances, and promotion arrears. These issues had been major points of contention, leading to the strike action.

Speaking on SUM TV's TODAY'S POLITICS, the Chairman of NASU-TSU, Comrade Musa N. Ipeyen, and the Secretary, Comrade Danladi Bala David, expressed their appreciation to the Taraba State Governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, for his personal intervention and commitment to resolving the industrial dispute. They also commended the school authorities and the Commissioner of Tertiary Education, Professor Nicolas Namessan, for their efforts in ensuring that their grievances were addressed.

The suspension of the strike is expected to bring relief to students and staff at the Taraba State University, who have been affected by the industrial action. The NASU-TSU branch has directed all its members to resume work immediately, effective January 27, 2025.

This development comes on the heels of a similar resolution reached by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Taraba State University Chapter, which suspended its strike action after the Taraba State Government committed to addressing their demands ¹.
