REPORTING FROM THE FIELD: UNVEILING THE RICH HERITAGE OF THE MUMUYE TRIBE

By Chief Gabriel Olayinka Motunrayo, Founder/CEO, Taraba Business Group

Yesterday, I embarked on a journey to Zing, with a stopover at Pantisawa, the headquarters of Yorro Local Government. It was here that I had the privilege of paying homage to the Chief of Mumuye, His Royal Highness Ado Mazang, and was warmly received by him and his team.

As I interacted with the Chief and his people, I couldn't help but be fascinated by the rich cultural heritage of the Mumuye tribe. The Mumuye people, also known as the "Mumuye tribe," are an ethnic group primarily located in Taraba State, Nigeria. Their ancestral roots are deeply intertwined with the history of Yorro Local Government Area, which is situated in the northeastern part of Taraba State.

According to historical accounts, the Mumuye people have a rich cultural heritage that dates back centuries, with their ancestors being among the earliest settlers in the region. One of the most fascinating aspects of Mumuye culture is their traditional system of governance, which is still in place today. The Chief of Mumuye, His Royal Highness Ado Mazang, is the custodian of the tribe's customs and traditions.

During my visit, I was struck by the warmth and hospitality of the Mumuye people, which is a testament to their strong cultural heritage. Yorro Local Government Area, where the Mumuye tribe is predominantly located, has a population of approximately 141,400 people, according to the 2022 population projection.

The area is bordered by Zing Local Government to the north and is situated between latitude 8.17˚N and 9.7˚N and longitude 11˚ 66˚E and 11˚ 46˚E of Greenwich meridian. The region's fertile soil and favorable climate make it an ideal location for agricultural activities, with yam being a major crop cultivated in the area.

As part of our efforts to promote financial inclusion in Taraba State, Yorro Local Government Area has been selected as the next beneficiary of our Financial Inclusion programme. This initiative aims to provide access to financial services for underserved communities, thereby empowering them to improve their economic well-being.

My visit to Pantisawa, the headquarters of Yorro Local Government, was a truly enriching experience. The warm reception accorded to me by the Chief of Mumuye, His Royal Highness Ado Mazang, and his team, was a testament to the hospitality and rich cultural heritage of the Mumuye people. As we move forward with our Financial Inclusion programme in Yorro, we are committed to supporting the economic development of this vibrant community and promoting financial inclusion for all.
