Taraba Social Media Influencer Arrested Over Alleged Defamation, Conspiracy

A popular social media influencer in Jalingo , the Taraba State Nafi'u Hassan has reportedly been arrested on charges of defamation, criminal conspiracy, trespassing, and intimidation.

The arrest was allegedly ordered by Hajiya Mamma Fati Hassan Lau, the wife of Senator Shu'aibu Isa Lau, who represents Taraba North in the Senate.

According to eyewitnesses, the arrest occurred on Friday afternoon when security operatives accompanying Hajiya Lau detained Nafi'u near her residence in Jalingo.

The influencer is known for his controversial online content, frequently criticizing Senator Shu'aibu Isa Lau's performance in office. Several videos circulating on social media platforms feature Nafi'u mocking the Senator and accusing him of failing to deliver on his promises to the people of Taraba North.

Sources indicate that the incident unfolded when Hajiya Lau noticed Nafi'u filming outside her residence. Concerned about his presence, she reportedly summoned him to explain why he was recording in the area.

However, when approached, Nafi'u allegedly attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by security personnel in her convoy.

Eyewitnesses confirmed that the influencer was overpowered after a brief chase, leading to his immediate detention.

"He was filming outside her residence, and when she asked him to explain his actions, he ran away," said an eye witness who requested anonymity. "The security personnel quickly caught up with him and brought him back."

A source close to Nafi'u's family confirmed his arrest, stating that he is currently being held at the GRA Police Division in Jalingo. A family friend, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Nafi'u was in the area to film a commercial jingle unrelated to any political content when the incident occurred.

"He was not there for any political reasons," the source emphasized. "Nafi'u was simply doing his job when he was arrested. We are deeply concerned about his safety and hope the authorities will handle the situation fairly."

Efforts to reach the Taraba State Police Command for an official statement on the matter yielded limited results. When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) Abdullahi Usman stated that he had not yet received any formal report regarding Nafi'u Hassan's arrest.

"I am not aware of the incident at this time," Usman said. "However, we will investigate and provide more information as soon as possible."

Nafi'u Hassan has gained significant attention on social media in recent years for his outspoken criticisms of political figures in Taraba State, especially Senator Shu'aibu Isa Lau.

His content, often delivered in a humorous yet biting tone, has resonated with many young people in the state who are frustrated with perceived political shortcomings.

However, Nafi'u's critics argue that his methods sometimes cross the line, turning what could be constructive criticism into personal attacks. The arrest has sparked heated debates on social media, with some users calling for his release and accusing the authorities of attempting to stifle free speech, while others argue that he should be held accountable if found guilty of defamation and intimidation.

It is worth recalling that another social media influencer and youth activist in the state, Auwal Aboutrika, was arrested in Jalingo and detained in Abuja in September after alleging that some leaders of the All Progressive Congress (APC) in Taraba State had petitioned against the appointment of Doctor Abubakar Dantsoho as Managing Director of the Nigeria Port Authority.

This incident highlights the growing tensions between social media influencers and political figures in Nigeria, where the lines between freedom of expression and defamation often blur. It also raises concerns about the role of security operatives in enforcing private interests, especially when it involves public figures and their families.

As of the time of filing this report, it remains unclear whether formal charges have been pressed against Nafi'u Hassan or if he will be granted bail. His legal team and supporters are reportedly mobilizing to secure his release, while his arrest continues to trend on social media platforms, drawing national attention.
