Drought and Food Security in Taraba State By Rejoice Nafinji

The scarcity of rainfall in 2024 wet season in so many part of Taraba State has severe implications for survival comes next year. Wet season farming period has been responsible for higher yields annually, but for this year, seven LGA in Taraba state witness less rainfall and by implications there will be short of food supply to the market.

Several farmers who cultivated Maize , millets, and yam are experiencing low yield due to limited rain fall.

Meanwhile in some part of the State, heavy down pour is already causing flood and destruction of farmers settlements.

In a flooded location of Namnai, Garba chedi and  Suntai Donga, farmstead near the riverbank has been washed by the flood, leaving farmers in disarray.

While some LGA are in search for more rain fall, others are already experiencing heavy down pour. This weather uncertainties can only be balanced if farmers are encouraged to subscribe to wet and dry seasons farming in all regions. As the water level increases in riverine areas, inhabitants are encouraged to hold up till dry season, and as drought set in within the upland locations, farmers are advised to subscribe to irrigation system of farming to survive all season.
