Members of the National Assembly from Southern Taraba Zone, have been called upon to invoke an emergency motion in communities affected by the incessant banditry attacks in the area. In a statement signed by the group's Publicity Secretary, the group said such measures were used in the past and was very effective.
The statement reads in part:
"The continued genocide killings, kidnapping and robbery of the Jukun people by the armed Tiv Militias in Chanchanji, Kofai Amadu, Ikyaor and Vaase, Jootar and Kyado Tiv settlements in Taraba State and villages in Benue State respectively is callous, babaric, satanic and evil in all ramifications.
Saddened by this evil, uncivilized, undemocratic, unconstitutional, unconventional, anti Islam and Christianity act of the Tiv militias, I wish to draw the attention of Senator David S. U Jimkuta, Dr. Mark Bako Useini and Prince Ayuba Zaku Dampar as our representatives in the Sourthern Taraba Senatorial District, Donga-Takum-Ussa/Yangtu and Ibi-Wukari Federal Constituencies. I'm calling on them to lend their voice and their voices in expressing our sadness, dilemma, challenge and feelings in the hallow chambers of the National Assembly. And as a matter of urgency, they should call on the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to act now and do what is expected of him as our President with full alacrity. It is time for them to initiate and move an "Emergency Motion" in the Green and Red Chambers of the National Assembly."
The statement continued that "His Excellency, Dr. Agbu Kefas, the Executive Governor of Taraba State is doing his best within his limit and constitutional power to ensure security of all Tarabans and people living in Taraba State, promote peaceful coexistence and harmonious living in Taraba State.
A stitch in time saves nine as we need peace for prosperity.
I recalled in 2001, Professor Dalhatu Sangari initiated and moved a "Motion on Callous and Babaric Killings of the Jukun people in Akwana and Arufu towns in Wukari by the Tiv militias".That motion prompted the Federal Government of Nigeria under the watch of President Olusegun Obasanjo to deployed more security agencies to that area and the National Assembly sent a high powered delegation that was led by the Senate President and Speaker of House of Representatives, Senator Chuba Okadigbo and Rt. Hon. Ghali Umar Naabah to come to Akwana and Arufu towns for oversight. Positive steps and measures were taken and security and peace were restored immediately.
Gar Chamba Chanchanji was recently killed. Every day or week people are kidnapped and today (12/08/2024) about six people were killed in a Tiv settlement along Wukari-Takum road."
