The ongoing leadership dispute within the Taraba State Football Association has taken a new turn as the parties involved have opted for an out-of-court settlement to resolve the issue. This decision came after discussions involving the judge, the Attorney General of Taraba State, and all concerned parties during a recent court session.
Earlier, the Federal High Court in Jalingo has issued summonses, by Justice Salim O. Ibrahim to the Taraba State government and the leadership of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) amidst allegations of contempt of court. This legal saga, initiated by Pastor Victor Ando Andrew and three other plaintiffs, has taken a dramatic turn as the court delves deeper into the issue.
The court's order, delivered on the 24th of May 2024, set the wheels in motion for a showdown between the state Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Joseph Joshua, and the legal system. The crux of the matter lies in the alleged contempt of court by NFF officials and the Taraba State Football Association chairman, raising questions about adherence to legal protocols and the authority of court directives.
In a twist, the reconvened Court session held on the 27th of May 2024 revealed that NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau and the General Secretary failed to honor the court's summons with Justice Ibrahim expressing dismay at this blatant disregard for the legal system, highlighting the seriousness of the allegations at hand.
However, the Taraba State's Attorney General, Yakubu Maikasuwa (SAN), proposed an alternative route for resolving the dispute – settling the matter out of court. This proposal sparked a series of consultations between the judge, the Attorney General, and all involved parties present in court, leading to an agreement that the matter be resolved out of court.
The court also directed that at the end of the out of court sessions and mediation which would be spearheaded by the person and office of Attorney General of Taraba State, all parties involved in the legal tussle are required to append their signatures, signifying their commitment to the resolution reached during the out-of-court settlement proceedings. This move aims to ensure that the agreed-upon terms reflect the true intentions and consensus of all parties involved.
The judge has set a date for the next hearing on the 8th of October 2024, during which the court will assess the progress and outcome of the out-of-court settlement managed by the office of the Attorney General of Taraba State. Emphasizing the need for all parties to remain committed to an amicable resolution, Justice Ibrahim reiterated the importance of ensuring that the matter is resolved satisfactorily before the adjourned date.
This legal drama, unfolding in the corridors of justice in Jalingo, serves as a stark reminder of the complex interplay between legal proceedings, institutional compliance, and the pursuit of justice. As stakeholders brace themselves for the next chapter in this unfolding saga, the eyes of the public are fixed on the outcome of this high-stakes legal battle.
With the fate of the Taraba State government, the NFF leadership, and the plaintiffs hanging in the balance, the resolution of this case is poised, not only to shape the future of legal proceedings and accountability in Taraba State, it's also a pointer to the resolution of the crises that has bedeviled the Taraba State Football Association. As the legal pendulum swings, only time will tell the ultimate verdict in this gripping tale of justice and defiance.
