The North East region of Nigeria is grappling with severe power supply disruptions after a tower collapse and multiple vandalism incidents along crucial transmission lines. Tower number T290, part of the Jos-Gombe 330kV transmission line, collapsed during cable stringing operations early this morning, May 27th, 2024.
The collapse occurred as contractors worked to finalize the jointing of the power cable, crucial for today's planned line energization. Despite facing security challenges, TCN contractors and engineering staff dedicated tremendous efforts to expedite the project, adhering to strict timelines.
Contractors, accompanied by TCN engineers and security operatives, worked tirelessly, maintaining a strict schedule from 6 am to 10 pm daily. However, the collapse of the fourth tower dealt a significant blow to the power restoration timeline.
Currently, the contractor is dismantling the collapsed tower members to facilitate reconstruction and final cable restringing. In addition to the tower collapse, vandalism targeted transmission infrastructure, resulting in the collapse of three towers along the Biu-Dambua 132kV transmission line and partial damage to tower T540 along the Makurdi-Jos 330kV transmission line.
TCN has mobilized contractors to initiate reconstruction efforts on the affected towers. Sdidi Mbah, GNI's Public Affairs representative, reaffirmed TCN's commitment to restoring normal bulk power supply in the affected areas. Mbah stressed the urgent need for collective vigilance to protect infrastructure from vandalism, urging prompt reporting of any suspicious activities.
These incidents highlight the vulnerability of critical power infrastructure and emphasize the need for preventive measures and community cooperation. Stay updated for further developments on the restoration efforts and ongoing investigations.
