I stumbled on a write-up written by, Hon. Zephania Yabung, chairman YOWICAN, Northern Zone, Taraba state. In response to the mumuye youth wing of the cultural development dated 12 Febuary, 2024. I read the content religiously and devoid of prejudice and advanced points.
Ordinary, I would not have condescended so low doing this, but for the ignorance of the unsuspecting public, I had to come out to vet my frustration regards the tardily behaviour of the leadership of CAN, Taraba state chapter, ranging from the top to bottom which have deviated from its core values that led to its formation. It is shameful that CAN has deliberately chosen to differ from its objectives which are:
- To serve as a basis for response to, the unity of the church, especially as contained in our lord's pastoral prayer.
- To promote understanding, peace, and unity among the various people and strata of society in Nigeria, through propagation of the gospel.
- To act as a liaison committee, by means of which its member churches can consult together.
Unfortunately, CAN has relegated itself to an instrument in the hands of politicians, especially the highest bidders, thereby instead of preaching the gospel, uniting churches, and spearheading and protecting the interests and rights of its members, they are busy endorsing and counter-endorsing politicians. In some cases, they will endorse a politician today and revoke it tomorrow to endorse someone else. In sincerity to the Mumuye youth cultural development, they did not do anything wrong by disassociating themselves and their preferred candidate from the revocation and endorsement of another candidate. Would it be a sin if CAN chose to be mute? There is nothing also wrong with calling the attention of CAN to the repugnant act that was demonstrated against the candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, in the inconclusive bye-election of the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing federal constituency that took place on the 3rd February, 2024. it is humiliating for CAN to say the candidate of the SDP was aware of their position. When did CAN become the PRO or the spokesman of the SDP candidate to announce his withdrawal from the contest? Is it not the said candidate who is supposed to make his withdrawal known to the public? With due respect to the leadership of CAN, I beg to say, that CAN under the current leadership is the worst, shameless and politically inclined. CAN should learn from other religious bodies and stop acting like a wing of a political party, or a political organisation. CAN is supposed to be a revered body, a body people will run to and come out uplifted and strong in Christ, a body that will protect the interests and rights of its members, but not the contrary outburst that has been consistently displayed by its leadership. I, therefore, call on the leadership of CAN, Taraba state chapter to deviate from dividing the church and Christianity, and start acting in line with the name, "Christian Association of Nigeria", not as an instrument of political witch-hunting or instrument of endorsement has lately been displayed in different fora. CAN should be humble enough to apologise to the mumuye youth cultural development and the public and stop the social media ranting. I hope the leadership will see reasons to start acting like a Christian organisation and not a wing of a political party.
