Takum Chieftaincy Dispute: Attorney General Clarifies Court of Appeal Ruling, Affirms HRH Barrister Sopiya Gboshi III Status

The Taraba State Commissioner for Justice and Attorney General, Barrister Yakubu Maikasuwa SAN has provided crucial clarification regarding the recent Court of Appeal ruling on the Takum chieftaincy dispute, emphasizing that the appellate court did not set aside the installation of Her Royal Highness (HRH) Barrister Sopiya Gboshi III as the Chief of Takum. Instead, the court ordered a retrial of the case at the High Court, ensuring a fresh examination of the matter.

Following the ruling, there has been widespread speculation and misinterpretation regarding its implications. In response, the Attorney General stated that Barrister Gboshi remains the Chief of Takum pending the retrial. He urged all parties involved to respect the rule of law and allow the judicial process to run its course without interference or unnecessary tension.

The ruling has elicited mixed reactions. Some stakeholders view the retrial as an opportunity for a thorough reassessment of the case, while others fear it may prolong the leadership uncertainty in Takum. The Commissioner reassured the public that the government remains committed to a fair and lawful resolution of the dispute, emphasizing that the legal process should not be misrepresented to incite discord.

Legal experts have pointed out that the Court of Appeal’s decision does not constitute a judgment on the validity of HRH Barrister Sopiya Gboshi’s appointment but rather focuses on procedural fairness, ensuring that the matter is reconsidered under proper judicial guidelines. They stressed that a retrial is a standard legal process that allows for a fresh evaluation of evidence and arguments before reaching a final decision.

Meanwhile, community leaders and stakeholders continue to advocate for peace and unity, emphasizing the need for all parties to await the court's final determination without resorting to conflict or inflammatory rhetoric. The state government has reiterated its commitment to maintaining stability and fostering a climate of mutual respect among all ethnic groups in Takum.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the focus remains on ensuring due process, justice, and a peaceful resolution to the dispute. The Attorney General has reassured the public that the government will continue to uphold the rule of law while encouraging all concerned parties to maintain calm and cooperate with the judicial process.
