Taraba Political Tension Rises: *Deputy Governor’s Absence Triggers Succession Race* - LGA Chair, Lawmaker, Commissioners in the Race

The prolonged absence of Taraba State's Deputy Governor, Alhaji Aminu Alkali, has sparked interest in his position, with several individuals from the northern zone of the state vying to succeed him. For over 60 days, Alkali has been receiving treatment for a facial stroke illness at a hospital in Abuja, raising concerns about his ability to continue in office. According to earlier statements from his office, Alkali is responding well to treatment. However, his extended absence has created a power vacuum, drawing attention from several ambitious politicians from the northern zone of the state. Among those eyeing the deputy governorship seat is a local government council chairman from Taraba North who has been lobbying through former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. This chairman has also been reaching out to prominent emirs in the north, soliciting their influence to persuade Governor Agbu Kefas to anoint him as Alkali's replacement. Another strong contender vying for the position is a member of the House of Representatives from the northern part of the state. This individual has been actively lobbying, crisscrossing the country to gather support from key stakeholders and party leaders. Other contenders include Honourable Commissioners from the northern zone, who are also working to succeed the deputy governor. As the 90-day mark of his absence approaches, the state House of Assembly will be constitutionally required to request his replacement, paving the way for a formal succession process. Ultimately, the decision of who will replace Alkali rests with Governor Agbu Kefas. As the state awaits the governor's decision, the behind-the-scenes maneuvering is likely to intensify, reflecting the high stakes and competing interests involved in this delicate succession process.
