In a bold move to tackle environmental degradation and promote sustainable development, the Taraba State government, under the leadership of Governor Agbu Kefas, has launched a special task force to combat illegal mining and deforestation. Recently, Honourable Dauda Agbu Samaila, Executive Chairman of Wukari Local Government Council and ALGON Vice-Chairman of Taraba State, welcomed the task force to his office to address concerns surrounding Akwana and Arufu mining sites.
The task force's visit aimed to explore ways to harness the natural resources available in the LGA while ensuring environmental protection and responsible resource management. Key objectives of the visit included addressing concerns related to illegal mining and firewood activities, harnessing natural resources, and promoting sustainable development.
Led by retired Brigadier General Jeremiah Faransa, the task force has been actively working to curb illegal activities in the mining sector. In a recent operation, the task force arrested 3,500 illegal miners in Bali Local Government Area. However, the task force's methods have been questioned, particularly on the allegations that they burned down brand new mining equipment procured by the state government, worth millions of naira.
Governor Agbu Kefas's leadership has been pivotal in driving progress in Taraba State. The government's efforts to engage with local stakeholders and address concerns aim to create a more prosperous and secure environment for its citizens. The visit by the task force demonstrates Honourable Samaila's commitment to promoting responsible resource management and economic growth in Wukari Local Government.
Notable attendees at the meeting included His Royal Highness Manu Issac Ezekiel Apakhi Kun Rufun of Arufu Chiefdom, Security Agencies, Mr. Emmanuel Salla DPM Wukari LGA, Hon. Agbu Mariki SA On Security Matters, Prince Gideon Samuel CGS, and Honourable James D Jonathan Councillor Representing Akwana ward. This gathering of key stakeholders signifies a unified front against insecurity and a collective commitment to advancing the state's development.
In another development, the Taraba State government's collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) is another significant step towards enhancing security. Governor Kefas Agbu met with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, to discuss strategies for curbing insecurity in the state. The NAF has pledged support for patrolling the porous border with Cameroon, a known route for criminal activities ².
In addition, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) has been actively engaged in promoting peace-building initiatives in Taraba State. The Engaging Local Actors to Promote Peaceful Coexistence among Farmers and Herders in Taraba State (ELAPC) project has brought together over 3,600 representatives of farmers and herders, Muslims and Christians, women and youth, to address conflict drivers and adopt inclusive strategies for reducing violence ¹.
With these concerted efforts, Taraba State is poised for economic growth and environmental protection. The government's commitment to sustainable development, coupled with the task force's efforts and stakeholder collaboration, will undoubtedly yield positive results. As the state continues on this path, its rich cultural diversity and natural resources will be harnessed for the benefit of all its citizens.
