- In Commemoration of the September 13, 1994 Maiduguri Flood Disaster:
30 Years Later
Today, I somberly remember the devastating flood disaster that struck Maiduguri on September 13, 1994, leaving an indelible scar on our city and its people as well as the environment. As I reflect on that fateful day, my heart goes out to the families who lost loved ones and those who suffered unimaginable losses.
In a poignant turn of events, we find ourselves facing a similar but a more devastating crisis with the recent 2024 collapse of Alau Dam, leading to the current flooding in Maiduguri. My thoughts are with those affected, and I stand in solidarity with them during this challenging time.
As we commemorate these tragic events, I demand that the government diligently investigate and punish individuals or agencies found guilty of negligence and/or sabotage, which led to the monumental damage inflicted on innocent lives, families, the community, and the environment. It is only fair that those responsible are held accountable and that relief measures commensurate with the damage done are provided to the victims.
Furthermore, I urge the government to proffer lasting solutions to prevent the recurrence of such disasters. This includes investing in robust infrastructure, enforcing environmental regulations, and implementing effective early warning systems.
May the memories of the past serve as a reminder of our resilience and strength in the face of adversity. May the victims of the 1994 flood disaster continue to rest in peace, and may their memories inspire us to build a safer, more sustainable future for all.
