A Mobile Court sitting in Jalingo, Taraba State capital, to deliberate on Environmental Protection, visited and decisively sealed an illegal mining site situated at Mayo Sina in the Sardauna Local Government Area (LGA). The move was an effort to combat environmental degradation and safeguard the State's natural resources.
It could be noted that this bold action was prompted by the alarming level of environmental degradation caused by unlawful activities at the said mining site in a flagrant violation of the Environmental Impact Assessment Law.
It is not the first time that the Taraba State Mobile Court has taken decisive action against illegal mining activities. A few weeks ago, the court carried out a similar momentous verdict in Jalingo town. In that verdict, seven individuals, who were found guilty of engaging in illegal mining in the State, were convicted and sentenced to three years of imprisonment. Moreover, they were each handed a substantial fine of N100,000. This stern judgment demonstrates the State's commitment to curbing illicit mining practices that wreak havoc on the environment.
Through a combination of legal action and proactive enforcement, the State continues to send a strong message that these practices will not be tolerated.
The special court representative barrister Neirus Johnson said it is no longer business as usual on the side of the judiciary and government calling on those involved to desist or face the full wrath of the law.
He said Governor Agbu Kefas's decision was sacrosanct in the best interest of the state suspending all forms of mining activities in the state.
Barrister Neirus Johnson added that no stone will be left unturned to implement the executive order and the Environmental protection law.
