The Taraba State Ministry of Heritage and Ecotourism under the leadership of Hon Joseph Titus Nagombe, has met with Association of Hotel Managers in the state to discuss the government's initiatives aimed at regulating, standardizing, certifying, and overseeing hotel operations. These efforts are focused on establishing norms that will protect and sustain the hospitality industry for the benefit of all stakeholders.
During a recent meeting at the Ministry's conference hall, the Commissioner, Hon Joseph Titus Nagombe said that the engagement is an opportunity for him to interact with the association one-on-one since he assumed office saying “Our coming together today is to interact to know one another and discuss issues of concern to the industry”.
Among the primary topics discussed were the development of a guests data collection system, hotel registration with the ministry, introduction of tourist tickets in all hotels, standardization of facilities, and the publication of hotel information in the Ministry’s tour guide, along with establishing leadership structures at hotel levels.
The commissioner conveyed the government’s intention to make Taraba state a leading tourism destination in Africa, highlighting the importance of maintaining a comprehensive list of registered hotels across the 16 local government areas. He also stressed the need for hotels to upgrade their amenities to comply with global standards and emphasized the creation of a guest data collection system to enhance security and effective operational coordination through strong leadership structures.
The ministry has also initiated plans to compile detailed information about all hotels, which will be featured in its upcoming magazine and tour guide, allowing potential tourists to access information about the services and facilities available. Additionally, the ministry have designed a framework for tourist tickets to be introduced in all hotels.
In response, the Chairman of the Association commended the ministry for organizing such an unprecedented meeting, noting that the association has long sought mandatory registration processes similar to those in other states to combat the operation of some hotels outside legal protocols that undermine industry standards.
The meeting was attended by several officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mr. Christopher Machoko, Managing Director of Taraba State Tourism Development Board, Mrs. Mark Useni, the Ministry's Secretary, Director of Planning, Director tourism among other staff.
